I’m Still Not Brave Enough by Joshua Hammond

I’m still not brave enough to ask for help. I know that the scritch-scratching of lead on paper will yank my attention like a chain. I know that the strong perfume will cloud my mind with sickly-sweet smoke. I know that the tick-tock of the analog clock will slip-slide through my ears as the minutes slip swiftly by.

My mind should be a docile dog, but is instead a mutinous mutt, pulling on its leash at every smell, ears swiveling towards every sound. I’ve tried to tame it, but my puppy whispers are drowned out by the hellhound’s horrid howls. I’m brave enough to battle this beast alone, but I’m still not brave enough to ask for help.

Joshua has been reading since he was two years old. He reads books, comics, manga, poetry, interviews, articles, and labels on chip bags. He also loves listening to audiobooks and podcasts.
